KSTUAA seeks to triple the number of Alumni Docents available!

The "Alumni Docent" program is one of the crown jewels of the Theta-Upsilon experience! 

We are not aware of a single fraternity in all of North America that systematically matches a pledged/new member with an alumnus from a similar major, in a profession of interest or locality so that the undergraduate can start their professional networking!

As the Chapter has grown and is expected to continue to grow, KSTUAA seeks to triple the number of alumni available as Docents. (Click to sign-up: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZB37YGQ)

The program was introduced by the KSTUAA Chapter Advisory Council (CAC) during the Colony phase in the fall 2021 and remains popular with alumni and undergraduate members. What make this possible is two surveys online surveys/forms the CAC creates: one that every new pledge fills out that provides information about his major, career interests, hometown, hobbies and other information and second one for alumni indicating heir previous major, current and previous occupations, companies and interests.

A member of the CAC then matches each undergraduate with an alumnus that most closely matches the interest or background. Once the matches are complete the CAC provides each other's contact information and some initial profile information to make it easy to start a conversation. The undergraduate member is asked to initiate contact and schedule an initial phone conversation. 

The alumnus will share whatever insights they can and if possible help the undergraduate network with other professionals in the area of interest.

FAQ

Is this an “Alumni Big Brother” Program?

Not exactly, but there are some similarities. We purposefully don’t want to confuse the two programs. The focus of this program is on “career-interest networking.” While we hope this promotes friendly fraternal bonds that last a lifetime, the focus is connecting undergraduates with alumni from the same major or career interest to help them as they investigate and start their professional careers.

How much time are you expecting from Alumni?

Just a phone call to start. You’ll get introduced, learn a little bit about each other and if you have some connections or ideas about what might be helpful to him and his professional objectives share those. We’d love to see the alumni reach out once a year to check in, but that isn’t mandatory. Maybe you will have some additional ideas or contacts that would be helpful. We are sure he will appreciate you helping him with introductions to other people in the field of interest.

Can I introduce the undergraduate to non-Kappa Sigs in his field of interest?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! That is exactly what this is about! Networking! It starts with a Theta-Upsilon Alumnus that is willing to get to know the undergraduate a little bit, understand his interests and goals and then being a helpful brother and providing ideas and warm introductions to contacts you have. Maybe that is another Kappa Sig, but more likely it will be someone in your list of 100s of contacts you’ve made over time. It will be up to the undergraduate to pursue the connections from there. The Docent program gives our members an helpful start.

How do we get connected and will I get some information about the member beforehand?

When there is a match, a member of the CAC will send you a profile of the member (pledged member in most cases.)  It will include a photo and information like hometown and interests. We will be providing your information to him too so you will both have a head start on the conversation. We will ask the member to reach out to you and schedule a time to speak.

I am retired, do you really want me?

Yes. We want you if you ever held a job! You will have perspective about the industry and about being successful that will benefit the undergraduate. It’s okay if your professional network is not as active. The conversation is great practice and there are other benefits of the undergraduate getting to meet and speak with an alumnus.

I am just starting my career, do you really want me?

Yes. Undergraduates will benefit from interacting with alumni just starting out!  That is probably one of their primary concerns.. “How do I get hired without having a lot of experience?” If you are employed, you already made that leap! 

What if he changes majors or his interests really aren’t in my wheelhouse?

We will be attempting to match undergraduate interests to alumni that have or are working in the field of interest. Failing that we will try to match undergraduates based on majors. In some, circumstances there wont be a good match, for example some majors and professions are new. In those cases, we are likely to match based on hometown if we can. The success of this program will not be about finding an exact match but rather that fact that we pair an inexperienced undergraduate member with an alumnus that has professional experience! You likely know people that the undergraduate might benefit from meeting. It might be a friend of a friend that brings the real valuable connection that helps the member.

What does the alumnus get out of this?

We hope that you will find the opportunity to meet a new generation of Kappa Sigs enriches your own Kappa Sigma experience and adds credence to the idea that our fellowship is not for a college term only but for life. We hope that the interaction might prompt in person connections when you visit Oxford whether for Homecoming, our 5-year anniversaries or one of those trips just-passing-through. This investment in the next generation will continue our legacy and make the Chapter stronger.

I signed up before but haven't been matched?

This is normal. We will assign undergraduates based on whatever comes through as interests.  That can be random. We are glad you signed up and will reach out to you as soon as we have someone interested in your profession, industry or major.

Theta-Upsilon is part of a Record Breaking SAJ Weekend

Theta-Upsilon Brothers donated a chapter-best $25,818.32 for the 2023 Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving! 

While this placed Theta-Upsilon in third place among Chapters across North America, it more importantly added two more Scholarships Leadership Awards next year, bringing the total available to the chapter to five! A video message of the three award recipients was featured on the Chapter's Campaign page.

Theta-Upsilon was a key part of a record breaking campaign for Kappa Sigma and its Endowment Fund. Worthy Grand Master, Adam Merillat reported in a communication to volunteers with his appreciation for the accomplishments:  

• Record number of Gifts: 16,441

• Record dollars raised:  $793,876

• Record number of Undergraduate Participation

• Record number of 100% Participation by Chapters

• Record number of Districts with 100% Undergraduate Participation

100% of the Theta-Upsilon undergraduate members contributed the minimum $10.34 or more, winning several challenges and adding donations from the Worthy Grand Scribe, Worthy Grand Procurators and other volunteers.  Grand Master, Patrick Miller served as the Chapter's Undergraduate Ambassador and finished #14. Former Grand Master, Emmett Jones was invited to travel and help with the fundraising at SAJ command central. 

Theta-Upsilon received 197 gifts in total, 10th most in the country.  About 60 were first time donors to the weekend!  Brothers Jim Lewis IC '74, Chris Elder IC '85 and Wes Bren IC '85 set the giving in motion by making matching challenges. The initiative was enthusiastically embraced by brothers and Theta-Upsilon jumped up to third place on the first day of the campaign and never lost it as the amount kept growing as alumni donated on Saturday and Sunday. The total was 150% more than the 2022 year and represents the 6th year the amount has grown.

2023 HOF Inductee Announced!

Please join us in extending congratulations to Brother Brad Mikes, 1982 initiate as the 2023 inductee into the Theta-Upsilon Hall of Fame. His induction and celebration will be held in Oxford during the Homecoming Weekend this Fall. Friends and Brothers are encourage to watch for the upcoming date and come and join in the celebration with the Chapter present.

Brother Mikes is Managing Partner for IPE, a software provider concentrating on advanced production management and incentive payroll systems and started Mikes Enterprises, LLC in Greenville South Carolina in 2008. Brad's previous professional roles included being Vice President for several technology related companies as well as holding various sales and marketing roles.

Brother Mikes is probably best known for his service on the KSTUAA Board as the Communication Committee Chairman since its formation in 2012. He served as Vice-President during the early years of the board and helped plan KSTUAAs 45th, 50th and 55th Anniversary reunions serving as the 50th Anniversary Chairman. He also was an integral part of the restart effort chairing the committee considering options for the facility. As the KSTUAA Communication Chair, Brother Mikes has made sure that every issue of The Caduceus contains an alumni update for the last 10+ years, has taken a lead in managing KSTUAA's social media sites, and perform editing duties for the annual Fricker Report. He is also in charge of the Memorial Fund and KSTUAA's efforts to honor those that have joined the Chapter celestial.

Brad is also known as "Bracket Master Mikes" for yearly management of several KSTUAA fundraising efforts, most famously, the Cossa Challenge, KSTUAA's fundraiser coinciding with the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament each year. Brother Mikes also introduced KSTUAA Super Bowl Squares to the mix. Brother Mikes is a regular donor/financial supporter of KSTUAA. 

During his undergraduate years, Brad was pledge class president, Assistant Grand Scribe, Assistant Grand Treasurer, Grand Treasurer, & Pledge Educator. As GT Brother Mikes (and Brother Wagner, GT before him) worked to eliminate $32K of chapter debt (after the move to Withrow Ave). The Chapter had $0 debt when Brad left the Grand Treasurer position.

HOF process:

Nominations were gathered from alumni through a Survey Monkey form in the Fall. That information was provided to the HOF Nomination Committee who spoke to the nominees and built out profiles that were then provided to the 25 HOF Inductees from 2000-2022 who voted for 1 inductee! It was a very strong field of nominees and you can expect to see those other nominees inducted in the coming years.

Support Our Chapter's Scholarship Fund
March 3-5: Goal is $6,700+

Alumni are asked to make a tax deductible donation to our Chapter’s scholarship account this March 3-5, 2023 during the Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. 100% of the donation goes specifically to our Chapter’s fund inside the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund. 

Last year $10,835 was raised for Theta-Upsilon's fund from 109 donors including alumni, undergraduates, family members and Kappa Sigma volunteers. Theta-Upsilon was 2nd in Ohio, 12th in the country in amount donated with dozens of brothers donating for the first time and winning an extra $500 from the Endowment Fund Trustees for being in the top 25. 

This year, KSTUAA Board has set our goal at $6700 to generate four Scholarship/Leadership Awards each year for our members.  The Chapter is eligible for one SLA for every $10K in the account.  The Chapter's balance stands at $33,334.40 so we are needing $6700 to cross $40K or $16,700 to reach $50K and five Scholarships each year! 

Three KSTUAA Board members have already pledged at least $3,000 in Challenge matches to give us a boost. All donations to the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund are recognized in our list of donors on this website.

KSTUAA Super Bowl Squares Returns-Bigger than ever!!

$1400 in potential prize money!! With KSTUAA proceeds going to support the Composite Reprint Project!   

Back by popular demand and bigger this year than before... KSTUAA Communication and Events Committee is hosting TWO Squares of our popular Kappa Sigma Super Bowls Squares game to brighten your cold, cloudy winter days! (Last time we did this the first board filled up pretty quick!) 

The Kappa Sigma Super Bowl Squares is our simple take on a perennial favorite where alumni can pick squares with two numbers that reflect all the possible combinations of the last digit in any score. Pick the square that matches the AFL and NFC teams scores during a quarter end and you are a winner!!!

KSTUAA will use dues to fund the printing and mailing of our Alumni Newsletter and any/all extra donations to fund the Composite Reprint Project. Each Composite reprint costs about $250-300 based on retouching so we welcome your donations.

Clarifying Donations and KSTUAA recommendations

We receive questions from time to time and we hope the following content and FAQ will be helpful to you.

First. We want all our alumni to understand how important it is to contribute your "time, talents and treasure" to secure the health of our Theta-Upsilon Chapter, our Alumni Association and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Some examples: 

• Alumni donations have helped us support Chapter operations buying tables and chairs for meetings, furniture, signage and other things that will help with recruiting. 
• Alumni donations are creating a new secured Conference/Trophy Room inside the Chapter House to promote excellence and showcase the 1967 & 2022 Charters and memorabilia.
• Alumni donations are recreating half size composites of all the class years to hang in the bedroom hallways. This was requested by undergraduates and we are excited for alumni to be able to return and see these. 
• Alumni donations during the SAJ Weekend of Giving (March 4 each year) have grown the Theta-Upsilon's Scholarship Fund to a size where it will provide four scholarships each year. As donations come in this number will grow. 
• Alumni donations have supported the Chapter's philanthropy efforts.
• Alumni donations help us print and mail the Fricker Report and support alumni events at Miami and online like the recent College Bowl Contest.
• Alumni donations help us recognize brothers that have joined the Celestial and console family members through our Memorial Fund.      

Second. Alumni donations signal to others that our alumni care about what happens to our Chapter. This is critical for Miami University (think Beta Bells) as well as Kappa Sigma.

Some examples:

• KSTUAA made donation to Miami University during our 50th anniversary which resulted in a Flowering Tree and plaque being installed near the Chapter House.
• KSTUAA made donations to purchase a stone on the the Stephen Alonzo Jackson Memorial Plaza. Additionally alumni have purchased stones and bricks further supporting the Endowment Fund and the Chapter's Scholarships.
• Alumni have become donors through the Jackson's Men Program and paid Kappa Sigma Alumni Dues signaling our commitment to the Fraternity.

Third. KSTUAA seeks to recognize and thank alumni who donate by recording their names on the Donors Page each year. In addition, KSTUAA recognizes donations made to Kappa Sigma and to the Chapter's philanthropies as well as the donations of in kind services and expenditures.  While this pages refreshes each year, KSTUAA posts everyone's name who donated at the end of the fiscal year.

FAQ.

Q. I made a donation to Kappa Sigma's Endowment Fund or donated to the Chapter's philanthropy. How do I let KSTUAA know about it? 

A. Simply, email us at KSTUAA@gmail.com and provide us details. The amount will be added to whatever KSTUAA donation or Dues payment you've already made.  If you haven't made a donation to KSTUAA in the Fiscal Year you can do so easily with PayPal.  

Q. Are donations to KSTUAA tax-deductible?

A. No. KSTUAA is a 501-(c)-7 not-for-profit "social organization" and not recognized as a 510-(c)-3 charity.  The Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund is a (c)-3 and donations made during Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving are tax-deductible.     

Q. Where can I direct my questions?

Q. I would like to add benefit the Chapter or Kappa Sigma in my will or as a beneficiary to a Life Insurance policy.

Q. I would like to make a donation to Miami University that will benefit the Chapter. Can that be done? 

A. KSTUAA has discussed several options with Miami about creating an Endowment Fund that benefits the Chapter. We have not created an account yet but are interested in seeing that happen.  Email us at KSTUAA@gmail.com and we will call you back.

Q. Where can we see the balance of the Theta-Upsilon Chapter's Scholarship Fund balance? 

A. Information about the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund, its Trustees and programs can be found at https://www.kappasigma.org/endowment-fund/.  The trustees publish the balances of each chapter on a separate page: https://www.kappasigma.org/endowment-fund/chapter-scholarship-fund-balances.

As of Fall 2022 the Theta-Upsilon balance stands at $33,334.40!
This amount has grown steadily each year through donations of our alumni primarily through the SAJ Weekend of Giving. Below are the recent CSF Balances.

Q. Does the size of our Chapter's CSF impact the scholarships given out? 

A. Yes. While the Endowment Fund Trustees award at least one Scholarship award to every chapter, those chapters with more than $10,000 in their CSF often see more awards and larger awards.  For example with the Theta-Upsilon 2022 CSF Balance being over $33,000 our Chapter saw three brothers given awards.  Theta-Omicron Chapter with a CSF of over $70,000 saw seven members receive awards!      

KSTUAA Works to Return Composites to the Chapter House

Over the decades, all but four of the composites were stolen or damaged beyond repair by flooding in the basement of the Stone House at 404 E. Withrow St. Calls were made to the original vendors to determine what archives existed to determine if replica’s could be made, but unfortunately none of the vendors had preserved any of the archives.

So a project spearheaded by KSTUAA Secretary, Brother Craig Stichtenoth ’72 and Wes Bren ’85 seeks to create replicas using miniature composites. The plan is to leverage the small composites and photographically enlarge them slightly before printing on a durable acrylic or aluminum. These replicas will then be installed in the hallways of the Show Box at 406 E. Withrow to spruce up the bare walls and add a sense of tradition and history like the original composites did.

The goal is install a replica of every composite. Thanks to the help of Brothers Bill Weirough, Doug Buse, John Jahoda, John Wilson, Norm Witzler, Mark Morgan,  Brad Mikes, Wes Bren, Larry Rosinski, Timothy Storer and Robert Dittrich we have 29 replicas in good condition.

We are needing alumni to help us secure the missing miniature composites for the following years:
1971, 1972, 1973,

1982,
1996, 1997, 1999,
2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011-2012 

If you have one of these missing years, please email us immediately so we can share how you can help us complete the set. We would like to have these installed before Rush starts in February 2023.

January 1 Update: We have collected 28 miniatures of what we believe are the 45 composites that were created from 1968-2015. 

They are at a printers where they are being retouched and printed at 28" x 18" with an 1/4" acrylic front and pvc back. The plan is to have these installed before rush.  Each will cost about $250 to be fabricated and installed.

Theta-Upsilon Hall of Fame Nominations needed by December 15

KSTUAA is seeking your input about alumni who should be recognized for their professional accomplishments, contributions to society or service to our Fraternity.  

If you know of an alumnus we should consider for this honor please fill in this nomination form before December 15, 2022. 

We inducted three Kappa Sigs into our Hall of Fame during the 55th Anniversary celebration You can see who else has been inducted into the Hall of Fame using the link on the right.  

With our Chapter back on campus, we will begin the new annual induction process we announced last year.  

The HOF Nominating Committee including the Chapter’s Alumni Relations Chairmen will gather information about each nominee and submit a ballot to the HOF inductees for their vote.  The induction will be held during Homecoming Weekend in years when we are not celebrating a 5 year reunion. Alumni that have been previously nominated but have not yet been inducted remain in the list for future votes.

Theta-Upsilon wins Kappa Sigma Awards

Chapter wins FACE for first time since 1997

The Theta-Upsilon Chapter was one of just two chapters chartered in the last year to win the "First-Year Founders Award for Chapter Excellence (FACE)."  Eight members and the former chapter advisor traveled to Denver Colorado on July 30 to receive the award at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Leadership Conference.  The FACE award recognizes chapters for excellence in Service, Scholarship, Ritual Proficiency, Recruiting and Chapter Operations.  This is the first FACE Award the Chapter has achieved since 1997. 

In addition to the Chapter award the several individual awards were announced.        

Outstanding Grand Procurator Award

Brother Fernando Romero '22 who was the second member of the interest group and colony and who is serving his second term as Grand Procurator received an award for Outstanding Grand Procurator. In further evidence of Brother Romero's commitment to excellence he completed his third Ritual Proficiency test (Grand Master's portion of initiation) while at the conference.

Outstanding Alumnus Advisor Award

Brother Bren '85 who is now serving as the District Grand Master of Southern Ohio received an award for Outstanding Alumnus Advisor. Brother Bren was named the Outstanding Assistant District Grand Master of the Year last year at the Grand Conclave in Nashville, Tennessee. 

Outstanding Assistant Alumnus Advisor Award

Brother Garett Reinhart, a Nu-Psi Chapter founding member initiated in 2017 who also served as Grand Treasurer and Grand Master at Nu-Psi Chapter before graduating in 2021 received an award for Outstanding Assistant Alumnus Advisor. Brother Reinhardt is currently serving the Theta-Upsilon Chapter as the Alumnus Advisor after serving last academic year as the AAA-GT.
