Registration is Open!!

Dear Brother,

When was the last time you saw {insert your brother’s name here}?

5 Years ago? 10 years ago? 20 years ago? Not since you graduated?

We hope you are making plans to come to the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Theta-Upsilon Chapter in Oxford on April 28-29, 2017 because this once every 5 year weekend is really an opportunity to make it easy for you to reconnect with the friends and brothers you haven’t seen in years!

We all know how it is.

We all have responsibilities at home, as husbands, fathers and grandfathers. We have careers and civic or religious commitments, and money is always tight. But when else will you get an opportunity to reconnect to the men that come to mind when you think of Kappa Sigma?

We have spent 100’s of hours in planning this event to add to your experience and make it worth the trip!

  • If you haven’t experienced the Kappa Sigma Ritual since graduation… We have a Model Ceremony, Initiation and Explanatory Lecture scheduled!
  • If you haven’t been on Miami’s Campus for a while… We have tours scheduled so you can see and learn how much has changed!
  • If you want to see some photos from college days that will bring back great memories… We have reserved a “Memorabilia” room for guys to share photos, scrapbooks and mementos etc.
  • If you are curious about the state of the Greek System… We have the Director of Miami Greek Life speaking and answering your questions!
  • If you are curious about the state of Kappa Sigma… We have the Executive Director of Kappa Sigma himself, Mic Wilson with us, speaking and answering your questions!
  • If you are curious about the state of the chapter and its future… We have sessions that will bring you up on the situation, challenges and any future plans.
  • If you want to have a toasted roll, a gyro from Skippers or a bagel form the Bagel Shop… there is plenty of time to do that!
  • If you know someone being inducted into the Hall of Fame and want to support them… Make sure you sign up for the banquet
  • If you think we should donate something to Miami… We are donating funds and will have an ornamental tree and commemorative plaque installed.
  • If you want to bring your wife or invite a Lil Sis alumnae… Invite them to the lunch or banquet. They can participate in any of the events except the ritual meeting.
  • If you want to throw back some beers… Well there will be time to visit your old favorite joints with brothers!
  • If you want to play some golf… grab a partner and compete for the legendary Fricker Cup!!
Seriously, this weekend is packed!!!  You don’t need to do everything or any of this.  In the end it is a family reunion. In the end it is about providing you a chance to overcome the excuses and reach out to a friend and brother you haven’t seen in years and say “I’d really like to see you again and catch up. Let’s go to Oxford!!”

So please Plan it and book it now.  Let's take a little time to come to Oxford where you started these lifelong friendships and brotherhood and celebrate what Kappa Sigma and our brothers have brought to our lives!

Fricker Cup 2016 Helps Raise Money for Brother Haughn’s Family

Despite weather forecasts showing 80% chance of thunderstorms during the 2016 Fricker Cup, the brothers experienced beautiful skies throughout the day. Thirty minutes after the last teams finished the skies went very dark and a deluge of rain fell for almost an hour! Perhaps Brother Haughn, from his celestial position had made the special weather request to help those that had come out to help his family?

Unlike previous years, this year's Fricker Cup included a philanthropic purpose: to raise money for the Haughn Strong Fund, an educational fund to help the four children of Brother Chris Haughn after he passed away suddenly this summer.

The teams purchased Mulligans, Kessler Magical Putting Tape and the Eddie Fricker Switcheroo card to raise over $700. In addition, a portion of the registration fee was dedicated for the fund and several of the brothers made additional donations. All total, over $1000 was raised by this years participants.

Meanwhile, other alumni have been contributing to the total which now exceeds $3000! Over 28 alumni have contributed with several from other decades who didn't know Brother Haughn.

The event kicked off Friday night with alumni enjoying appetizers, beer and bowling at the Corner Alley Downtown a block away from the historic Public Square, Jack Casino and Quicken Arena, the Home of the NBA Champions the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The 2016 Fricker Cup was played at the Little Mountain Country Club on Saturday, September 10. The two man format with combined net score on the front nine and a Chapman Alternating shot format on the back nine produced competitive scores. Ultimately it was the hometown team of Brothers Dave Ledman and Rick Sippola that posted a winning score of 98 including one hole in one thanks to the Kessler Magical Putting Tape!

This year's event had a little controversy with the final group playing a scramble format instead of the alternating shot format forcing the FC Rules Committee to disqualify those teams because of the advantage.  At the awards ceremony afterwards the players were awarded a special prize of reading glasses to help them read the rules! The Brothers took the news well and in good spirits,  remaining grateful for the opportunity to help Brother Haughn's family.

An awards dinner and party followed at the home of Brother Rick Sippola who cooked steaks for everyone. Before handing out prizes, Brothers Bill Beringer and Dominic Favazzo shared memories both recent and from college of Brother Hee-Haw-Haughn (a knickname he earned for his big friendly smile). Brother Beringer led a prayer before dinner thankful for the weekend and in supplication for the Haughn family.

Prizes Winners included:

Fricker Cup Trophy: Dave Ledman IC’81 & Rick Sippola IC’85
Alumnus who traveled the farthest: Bill Beringer
Most Players from a Family Tree: David Vuicich IC’72
Best Team Uniforms: David Vuicich IC’72 & Fritz Kiefer IC’73
Best Photo while on course: Dominic Favazzo IC’89
Best Video while on course: Wes Bren IC’85

L-R: Brad Flinders '86 Fricker Cup winner 2014, Rick Sippola '85 Fricker Cup 2016 winner, trophy boy Brett Howell '86, Dave Ledman '81 winner of 2016 Fricker Cup, Brian Harding '86 pose for a photo during the 2017 Fricker Cup. Brother Ledman was called away from the 2016 Fricker Cup celebration and was not available for a championship photo.

The 2017 Fricker Cup will be held Friday, April 28, 2017 as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration. The Fricker Cup will remain a 2-man format, so brothers are encouraged to start finding a partner soon.  Come back to this site in November to reserve a spot in the big event!

Additional pictures & videos of the event can be seen on the KSTUAA Facebook Group or searching #FrickerCup on Twitter.

Special Thanks for this year's Hosts: Brothers David Vuicich and Rick Sippola who did a fantastic job in making the the Cleveland arrangements! The Friday night location was great and the combination of the course and Ratt's house made for a top notch event! AEKDB!

Thanks to the Alumni that contributed in FY 2016

Thanks again to the 46 Brothers that contributed donations and participated in Alumni events in our fiscal 2016 year (June 2015-May 2016)

Your donations helped pay for the printing and mailing of an Alumni Newsletter to over 1000 Alumni, food and beverages at the 2015 Homecoming Tailgate, the 2016 Alumni Weekend Open House and subsidized some of the travel expenses for undergraduates and one of our Alumni volunteers in the appeal that won back the charter in November 2015, and paid for some repairs to the Stone House and some emergency assistance to the Housing Company.

This is a perfect example of why KSTUAA was created and we sincerely appreciate the broad support of time and resources of those you see below
. As we work to return an undergraduate chapter back to Miami support will need to continue and broaden and we appreciate your continued words of encouragement to the volunteers on the KSTUAA Board and your contributions.
