KSTUAA Board Sets Alumni Event Calendar for Upcoming Years

The KSTUAA Board met Dec 14 for one of its six regular meetings and approved the following dates for Alumni events. We hope to see you there!

The Fricker Cup

The second annual Fricker Cup will be held September 12, 2015 (the weekend following Labor Day), at  Makray Golf Club in Chicago. Brother David Buckley Jr. IC‘87 is serving as the local host and has secured the course. Brother Wes Bren is forming an event committee to plan the weekend. Past players and alumni local to Chicago are strongly encouraged to help us plan and make this into a marquee Theta-Upsilon event you don’t want to miss.
The third annual Fricker Cup to be held September 10, 2016 (the weekend following Labor Day), at  a course to be determined in Northern Ohio.

The fourth annual Fricker Cup to be held April 28-20, 2017 in or near Oxford, Ohio as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

The KSTUAA Board decided at the annual meeting to schedule the Fricker Cup in different cities to promote greater participation and involvement. It also recommends that Fricker Cups be open to undergraduate members playing at a student price and that a philanthropic/Chapter development cause suitable for publication in The Caduceus be incorporated into the fee. Details will be worked out with the event committee and the KSTUAA Board.

Open House during Miami Alumni Weekends (Summer 2015 date set)

KSTUAA Board agreed to form and fund an event committee to begin plans for the Alumni Weekend 2015 in Oxford, Ohio. This year’s weekend is scheduled for the weekend before Father’s Day, June 11-14, 2015.  KSTUAA will host an open house at the chapter house on Saturday afternoon after KSTUAA holds its annual meeting in the morning.  Board member, Brother Mike McNally ’86 is serving as the event chairmen again this year.

Miami has special Milestone events planned for alumni that graduated as the Class of 2005 (10 year reunion) and Class of 1990 (25 year reunion). Typically, alumni with anniversaries on 5 year intervals attend these reunion events.

Please use this occasion to reach out to brothers that graduated with you and make sure they are connected to our social media sites and have an email with us so they can receive updates and the Fricker Report for details.

Miami has posted more information on the links below and created special Facebook pages to help you make connections with Miami Alumni (see below).

The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Theta-Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Sigma

KSTUAA Board approved the motion to form a representative event committee to begin plans for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Theta-Upsilon Chapter’s founding for April 28-30, 2017 in Oxford, Ohio

While it is too far out to reserve most venues and a schedule of events will not be created until Fall of 2016, the Board wished to make this date public so the chapter and alumni can include this date in your planning. The date was selected to avoid conflicts for those involved in filing taxes earlier in April and to hold the event before exam week preparations.

KSTUAA will continue the tradition of inducting alumni into the chapter’s Hall of Fame. (See the KSTUAA Blog for past inductees. )  As indicated above, the Fricker Cup will return to Oxford that year and it is likely that we will forgo an Open House at that year’s Miami Alumni Weekend.

We have emails for about 50% of our alumni and valid mailing addresses for another 25% so we would appreciate your assistance in helping us update out information so that every Alumnus can be invited.

KSTUAA Board Brings Leaders & Volunteers Together

The KSTUAA Board met with Alumni Advisors and the Grand Scribe during its Annual Meeting this summer in the newly constructed Armstrong Center during Alumni Weekend.  Members of the board and Advisors again met with the EC during Homecoming. (From Left: Mark Rowland (KSTUAA), Chris Elder (KSTUAA, AAA-GT), Keith Zurawski (AAA-GT), Tom Collins (AAA-GS), Zain Santamaria (GS), Tim Johnson (KSTUAA, Housing Company), Mike McNally (KSTUAA), not in photo Nathan Varnum (KSTUAA, AAA-GMC), Wes Bren (KSTUAA, AA)

Advisor and Alumni involvement have played important roles in the success of the Theta-Upsilon chapter.  Alumni and advisors were critical in the founding of the chapter and played key roles during the success seen in the 1990s. Alumni on the Housing Company invested hundreds of volunteer hours to manage the transition from Spring Street to Withrow and ultimately to retire the mortgage and keep the lights on despite the sanctions on the chapter from the university that prevented renters.

Despite these periods of progress, the chapter often struggled as advisors and alumni transitioned out of volunteer roles. There were times when roles were vacant or those in them were not able to devote the time needed in today's more complicated environment.

There has never been a group providing consistent coordination and guidance. This was one of the main reasons that the Alumni Association (KSTUAA) was created. KSTUAA seeks to complement the other groups by providing input, promoting coordination and establishing a strong Alumni network that can provide volunteers to the various groups that serve the chapter.

For example, this summer KSTUAA held its annual meeting during Miami's Alumni Weekend. The Board invited the Chapter's Alumni Advisor Team (AA & AAAs) to a brainstorming discussion at the new Armstrong Student Center before the Annual meeting to generate ideas. The chapter’s Grand Scribe was also able to attend.   KSTUAA also organized a meeting with the EC at Homecoming that again included the Alumni Advisor team, The Faculty Advisor and members of the Housing Company Board.

The KSTUAA Board is looking for 3 more volunteers to complete its roster. Alumni from the mid and late 1990's and also the 1970's would be greatly appreciated. The Board currently has members that were initiated in 1967, 1972, 1980's and 2010!

The Board is also looking for Alumni willing to serve on the Communications Committee and the Housing Advisory Committee that interacts with the Housing Company.

For more information on the organization see the "About KSTUAA" link at the right.

A huge thank you to the brothers that have made contributions in the new year. (KSTUAA's fiscal year starts in June). These donations funded the Alumni Weekend Open House, the Trophy and engraving for the Fricker Cup and the purchase of 4 tables for the chapter house to support an eventual meal plan. The all-volunteer board of KSTUAA will make additional investments in the chapter facilities, Homecoming and other events this year. If sufficient funds exist, we will product a printed newsletter.

First Fricker Cup Provides Drama in a Beautiful Location

Brilliant blue skies and a slight breeze greeted the golfers of the first annual Fricker Cup competition at Hueston Woods Golf Club in Oxford, Ohio.  For the front nine the best ball format gave the team of Brad Flinders ’85 and Keith Zurawski ’81 an edge as Flinders 25 years earlier had played as a member of Miami’s Golf team. Miami was one of the best in the midwest at that time and used this course as it home practice course.

After 9 holes Flinders/Zurawksi were in the lead with 4 strokes over the second place team of Tom Collins ‘83 and Jeff Meek ’87.  Collins was hopeful that the back nine format of Alternating Shots would help his team catch up, but when Zurawski’s 9 iron from 148 yeards out dropped 2.5 feet from the pin it signalled that the Fricker Cup would not be so easily

After a tie on 11, Meek won a point sinking his putt  after Zurawski missed long on a 5 foot putt on 12 and held ground when Flinders shocked everyone by chunking a 4 foot putt leaving it 18 inches short after another stunning Zurawski approach shot.  On 14 Collins dropped a 14 foot downhill putt with perfect speed and a deceiving left to right line. The team of Collins and Meek was now only 3 points back and feeling more confident.

Flinders and Zurawski were feeling the pressure and it appeared to have impacted Flinders who had been dropping balls within 6 feet of the pin regularly but on 15 left a 9 iron 21 feet below the pin. Zurawski’s putt with great speed was pin high but two feet to the left.  Keith marked the ball and replaced it with Flinders’s tee shot ball explaining that “Brad is more comfortable playing with his own balls.”

Down 3 points, Collins and Meek had to win the remaining holes including the course’s featured hole number 16, a 196 par three over a fairway made only of lake water!  But it was not meant to be as Meek’s shot went far left of the green and Flinders and Zurawski pulled out back to back shots that landed safely on the green.  While Collins and Meek combined to win a point on 17 they came up 2 points short in the end. The battle went to Flinders and Zurawski.

The trophy presentation occurred immediately after with the assistance Golf Course Host, Merideth, wearing white gloves protecting her from the curse of Fricker which is brought upon any human touching the trophy who has not yet won the contest. At long last the
winners were able to touch the trophy becoming the first people to do so with bare hands since its creation. Flinders and Zurawski both kissed the trophy and raised it above their heads in jubliation to the light applause of those in attendance at the awards ceremony.

Later near the parking lot, Flinders still high with testerone from the epic battle was recorded sharing his thoughts about the days competition and his feelings about winning the first event.  (Video is available on Twitter @KSTUAA)

The names of the winners will be engraved on the trophy cemementing their place in Theta-Upsilon history and commencing a new tradition for Kappa Sigma. They were also given smaller replica trophies to display at home.

The next epic Fricker Cup contest is being planned for the summer of 2015 at a location yet to be determined.
